EDUCATIONAL CODING AND ROBOTICS: LEARNING AND CREATING TO SAVE THE PLANET

From fighting malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, promoting the change of energy matrix in China, promoting early childhood education for girls in Mozambique, promoting dialogue for development in Colombia, generate innovation in Melbourne, make Rome a sustainable city and take care of the underwater life of the Arctic Ocean: these are some of the problems that are sought to be solved from the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, applicable to the whole world (infobae).


The SDGs are as a whole the first major global initiative to transform the world into a better place and to achieve this education and especially educational robotics plays a role fundamental.


Create a prototype of an irrigation system to favor crops in Malawi during periods of drought, a step counter to recreate the walks that children from Peru have to make to go at school, create a prototype that allows collecting the oil and petroleum that ends up in the seas, create an alarm system to prevent uncontrolled deforestation..., these are some of the project ideas that we can carry out in the classrooms using tools from programming and robotics.


New technologies can benefit the lives of many people around the world. For example, they can improve food safety, reduce waste, etc. The most feasible way to achieve it is through the system transformation educational, training and preparing teachers to teaching future generations to pass the classroom walls, connect learning with life and solve local and global problems through technology.


We live in a world of constant change and therefore we need "offer students tools that allow them to develop within the different social scenarios". This implies not only transmitting knowledge, but learning that DOES NOT HAVE AN EXPIRY DATE.



But How can I incorporate these objectives in my classroom?


In this global world, we need to guide and educate global students, who are able not only to adapt to the changes, but also getting involved in solving problems, leading, sharing, working together... for that we also have to be global teachers.


What do we propose?


1- Choose the ODS you want to work on: working on one of the objectives, you can introduce topics and issues closely related to any of the other development objectives sustainable


2- Introduce the topic in class with a video: a good way to explain to students complex topics related to the world around them, is do it through a video suitable for your age and level of understanding.


3- Establish a debate with your students: it is important that your students develop critical thinking and the ability to express their ideas, respect the ideas of others and to find solutions to the problems that arise and do it together, thus promoting cooperative work and learning


4- Plan a project linking robotics or programming with the Sustainable Development Goals ( Scratch, micro:bit, Lego Wedo, etc.), or let them choose from a limited number of proposals. They can also realize a free project by teams.


5- PUT INTO ACTION: Go through the walls of the classroom. It gives visibility to the projects carried out in class and takes an active part in raising awareness of the objectives of sustainable development to achieve a better world for all. It promotes that the students explain their projects to other classrooms of the same school, or of other schools, days to show parents and the educational community the projects carried out, etc.




WE CAN ALL MAKE CHANGE POSSIBLE: THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS are not just words...
